Here’s some more of the countdown behind the scenes of the Fitness Industry, from the Channel 5 television programme, just so you know and can work around or integrate the information into your daily approach.
45. Joggers Nipple:
Fissure of the nipple, also known as Joggers Nipple is caused through three components; friction between the nipple, your clothing and the movement in running and other sports.
It can cause irritation, dryness, soreness, even bleeding. The solution is a good sports bra for the ladies, a properly fitting top for men (where the fabric isn’t too loose and some nappy rash cream when it strikes. This acts as a barrier cream and this protects the skin from the textile
44. Office Coffee Cups And Bacteria
A survey was taken of office coffee cups and found to be wanting where bacteria is concerned. It was found that cups contained traces of E.coli or faecal matter. Traces of bacteria found on cups included the following:
- Enterobacter loacae
- Enterobacter aggoeran
- Klebsiella pneumoniae
- Citrobacter frundii
- Serratia liquefacians
- Serratia macesans
- Acinetobacter caloaceticus
Although these bacteria in themselves won’t necessarily cause illness they can affect those with a sensitive immune systems. And 60% of the cups contained coliform bacteria which is greater than the 10% observed in household cutlery and cookery.
The main culprits were swilling out with warm water, using clothes that don’t get properly washed (at high enough temperatures to kill the bugs) and not washing hands properly after using the toilet. The best solution was found to be the installation of drinks machines with disposable cups.
43. Bottled Water
The bottled water industry that is worth £1.6 billion/yr (2006) and how we’re being conned into believing we need to have filtered water to remain healthy. Tesco and ASDA are even selling us tap-water in their economy range, claiming that it has been filtered. They claim it is not the same as household tap water because it’s been filtered but do admit it comes from the same source.
Tap water is perfectly safe to drink just as it is, and not mentioned on the programme but there is research that shows it’s better for us because it builds up the immune system.
The Mayo Clinic claims that both types of water are sufficiently regulated but that certain groups may be susceptible to illness from drinking tap water, such as:
- If you are undergoing chemotherapy
- Living with HIV/AIDS
- Have received a transplant
- Are pregnant
- The elderly
At the website Education they have an interesting experiment you can carry out yourself to compare tap and bottled and what the indicators mean.
The debate rages on, but here’s a final reference on the matter from Wikipedia, it’s fairly extensive but inconclusive, I think the jury is out.
42. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
New research has revealed that on the exercise front all we need to do is 3-minutes of high intensity training or short intermittent bursts of intense anaerobic exercise per week. How exciting!!!
A typical HIT programme is said to go something like this:
- 3 x 30-seconds of high impact (cardiovascular training) such as the running machine or a spin class
- Followed by 1-2 minute intervals of rest in between
- Repeat 3 x a week
This will improve your fitness levels, your insulin sensitivity to the same degree if not better in some case then the current ‘norm’ of 150-minutes of jogging or walking a week.
According to Barry Jay a Hollywood Celebrity Trainer, HIT is the best way to get results, because you raise your heart rate and recover quickly, you quickly go in and out of the fat-burning zone, you’re pushing your body to limits in short spurts. He claims he’s seen the evidence of how people’s bodies change.
41. Deep Tissue Massage
It’s claimed that deep-tissue massage can be quite damaging in the wrong hands, causing skeletal injuries, permanent nerve damage and paralysis. If soft tissue is damaged it can be a long and painful recovery.
So it’s vitally important to ensure you are in the RIGHT hands regarding all things physical, mental and emotional. A really good way is to google them, check their testimonials and have a conversation with them beforehand. The thing is that there is such a thing as a practitioner/client fit, and that’s what you’re looking for. When you find someone you resonate with. the rest is eazy-peazy and is less likely to lead to injury or mishap.
Clearly the key to all health and wellness recovery is discovering what works best for you, and I hope these insights help, I’m learning a lot too.
And that’s it for the countdown this time.
