Back in the day we might have spoken of the Gold Rush, but these days we’re more concerned with the Sugar Rush and I wonder if you have ever experienced it yourself, I know I have. That momentary high and rush of energy, but the plummeting low of a downward spiralling mood afterwards combined with the heavy limbs, as I realize my body is doing it’s best to rush towards a zoned out compatoze feeling and it ain’t pleasant?
The medical field have made a link between increased intake of refined sugar and increases in Diabetes – Type II and META-Medicine has a different view, where it throws up another angle altogether. According to an article last summer by Victoria Lambert in the Daily Telegraph the figures are depressing.
But what can you do about having those cravings, and how did they start in the first place?
Having More Sweetness In Your Life
Let’s try something here, if you’re willing to play, let’s see if we can address your craving for sugar and sweet things right now, but be sure to take full responsibility for yourself and if anything arises that you don’t wish to deal with or you’re not sure how to then just stop:
- Just close your eyes
- Think about the sweet sugary things that you love
- Now see if you can connect back to the first time you had those, and it could be way back in your childhood, so be prepared to be transported
- What do you see?
- Who’s there?
- What’s the occasion?
- Is it a celebration of some sort?
- Now check in with your feelings (they’re possibly good ones that help you feel comforted)
- Maybe make a connection here between then and why you still resort to that substance now
Is It Just Mind Over Matter?
Recognize that you can have that good feeling (through memory) without having to imbibe and if you’re not sure how we can look at that another time.
This is a good exercise to combine with EFT Tapping, as that technique provides a great starting point that helps to really dig in and bring these sorts of feelings to the fore, in order that we can learn to have these associated good feelings without having to resort to the unhelpful (often destructive) behaviours.
- Now open your eyes.
That was a very quick exercise to show you the power of the mind, but also to show you the connection between early habits, their associations and how they continue to play us.
It may sound simple to do and it is, and it may be all you need to bring your awareness to something you hadn’t considered before. For others it may be the tip of the iceberg with more to do, and either is fine. If you want to find out how the techniques work to bring much deeper and lasting results, contact us for a chat.
