But how does this tie in with weight, well those same two phases are at play with weight fluctuation and the explanation below will clarify it to some extent, although weight can have another element at play as well.
This is because there are often two of these conflicts at play simultaneously, where something called a Kidney Collecting Tubule Syndrome adds a further complexity. And don’t worry if it’s as clear as mud, it took me ages to get my head around it too.
Phase 1 – Stress
The weight or disease process starts with a trauma, that can be small, medium or large and we call that a Significant Stressful Event. It’s the conflict that kick-starts the whole process, and is known as a UDIN which is an incident that was:
- Isolating event
- Where you had No coping strategy
And a shock (which can be something as simple as the tone of someone’s voice) affects both the neurological and physiological systems**
- The conflict kick-starts the STRESS or Sympathetic Nervous Phase into action but simultaneously the conflict goes to the brain (these are picked up on a C.T. scan – showing up as white sodium rings – and remarkably the same shape of conflict will be mirrored on an affected organ). With weight issues if there is a disease riding alongside it’s likely to be a relevant factor.
- The stress phase is easy enough to identity because you’ll find yourself reaching for quick-energy-releasing foods, such as the sugars and refined carbohydrates.
- At the same time these symptoms occur; blood pressure increases, obsessive thinking, erratic sleep and eating patterns, and we’ve all experienced this at one time or another.
- It’s just one of the ways you can start to put weight on, especially when the Stress Phase hangs around indefinitely.
Phase 2 – Healing
The next part of the process is where the issue gets resolved, just think of when you’ve had a stressful event at work and then you go off on holiday where there’s such a relief at being away from the original conflict (or person):
- Now the HEALING or Para-Sympathetic Nervous Phase begins, which is when the physical symptoms (of a disease/or weight gain) arrives, and thinking back to that holiday where you fell ill as soon as you got away – this is why.
- The second phase splits into 3-parts, with the hot, temperature ridden first part, followed by the Healing Crisis, when symptoms are at their peak (as the body is wringing out the water which can be painful). Once this is over the warm recuperative third part of the healing phase kicks in, which is when you want to eat more healthily, take better care of yourself and need more sleep (than usual). This is likely to be when you got the urge to start a new diet.
- However, if the original trauma isn’t cleared (as with chronic disease) the pattern will re-trigger and start all over again and I imagine most of you can relate.
- Similarly with weight, the body can veer in and out of the phases, of reaching for poor foods or denying food (especially under stress) where that’s your pattern, then going through an oh it’s not so bad after all phase, and deciding to start a new eating regime. But there can be the two conflicts at play with the Kidney Collecting Tubules Syndrome, as mentioned earlier, and if the correct one isn’t worked on first the conflict remains.
Finding Better Solutions
This is to give you an idea that you are not to blame here because it’s all doable, however most of us have been looking for solutions in the wrong places.
Once you get your head around the above model it helps to realize that when under stress it’s the body’s natural strategy to reach for quick-energy-releasing foods to sustain it, which means we don’t have to beat ourselves up any more, and feel any worse through mounting guilt, in fact you can even enjoy this phase (and that already relieves a lot of the tension) lol!
But instead of dieting you can start to unravel the underlying causes (or UDIN’s) because once you get clear of those the poor eating habits dissipate anyway. And the clearer you get of those, combined with better coping strategies, the less likely you are to be in a place where you are in long-term stress or dealing with the physical symptoms that have added their own particular challenges.
Getting Where You Want To Be
Of course your eating habits may be a million miles from what’s being described above and I’d hazard a guess it’s due to being so scrambled with good intentions and poor results.
But the more you’ve wandered off-the-beaten-track of eating regular naturally recognizable foods the more likely you are to need some assistance guiding you back into the clearing so you can now head for the right direction in order to reach your original destination, of a slimmer, more relaxed you.
** This does not mean that every traumatic event turns into disease, just that most disease runs through the above process, the only exclusion here would be a genetic condition, but even then the original UDIN can be traced back through the family line (if you’re open to the idea) but that’s a conversation for another day.
